Installing Solar Panels

Solar Panel Installation Process

Determine  Available Space & Position:

Before drilling any holes into your roof, carefully plan the positioning of your solar panels. Triple-check that they will fit properly and won’t interfere with other roof accessories. Ensure that the panels receive optimal sunlight exposure and avoid shadows.

Attach Mounting Brackets:

Attach mounting brackets to each solar panel before going on the roof and installing. These brackets will be used to secure the panels to your roof.

Mark Hole Locations:

Set the panels in place on your roof and mark where you need to drill holes. Try to find areas of the roof that have the most support. With a magic marker trace a line around the outside of the mounting brackets. Later you will need to make sure you have the sealant  about 1/2 inch out further than the bracket footprint. This will help secure the panel to the roof.

Drill Pilot Holes:

Now, move the panels out of the way and drill some small (1/8") pilot holes in the roof  where you marked the bracket holes.

Secure Panels in Place:

After drilling, apply a generous amount of Dicor sealant around the perimeter of the bracket outline you drew. This ensures a watertight seal and helps secure the panel.

Put the panels in their designated positions, indicated by the outlines you drew earlier.

Attach Panels to Roof:

Depending on the composition of your roof, use either the screws provided in your mounting kit or larger screws with coarser/deeper threads to attach the panels to the roof.

Seal with Dicor Sealant:

Apply a generous coat of Dicor Sealant (non-self-leveling) around the mounting brackets, and on top of them. This not only seals the mounting but also prevents the screws from corrosion. in addition to the mounting screws, the sealant actually HELPS secure the panels to the roof.

Remember that the specific process may vary based on your RV’s roof type (metal, rubber or fiberglass). If you have a fiberglass roof, VHB tape or Dicor Sealant as detailed in this article can be used instead of drilling holes.
